As I Watch You Sleep
by Joanne Elizabeth

As I ponder all the things
I will never get to do,
there is one comforting thought:
I get to watch you sleep.
Just me, no one else.
Only us, here in this room.
You, a delicate mini-soul, my dog,
snuggled up in my bathrobe
on the floor at the foot of my bed.
I get to watch you sleep.
I get to watch you twitch
as you dream great dreams;
I promise to pursue mine.
I promise you,
as long as you let me
watch you sleep.
